To celebrate my husband’s birthday, our group of ten headed to PYT Stop Cafe in Iloilo. Located along Burgos Street in La Paz, Iloilo City, Philippines, we chose it after church for a casual, budget-friendly Filipino meal that could accommodate a large group. We were especially keen on finding a place that offers boodle fight feasts, and PYT Stop Cafe fit the bill perfectly.

What is a Boodle Fight?

Boodle fight is a military-style eating style, also known as “eating combat”. This setup is where the food is placed on banana leaves laid on a long table. The food usually includes rice and (mainly dry) viands, so it can be easily eaten by hand.

How To Get to the PYT Stop Cafe in La Paz

The PYT Stop Native and Seafood Restaurant is located along Burgos Street, facing La Paz District Plaza. You may easily ride a “jeepney” that passes by that route, or take a cab or private vehicle to bring you to the location of the restaurant. From Huervana Street, it’s a no left-turn to Burgos Street, so vehicles would usually circle the La Paz District Plaza, turning left to Jereos Street, then left to Huervana Extension, then last left to Burgos Street. You’ll find PYT Stop before reaching the corner of Burgos and Huervana Streets.

The PYT Stop Cafe Venue and the Ambiance

Since we’re a large group, we called in advance for a reservation. First impression? The space was a bit cramped, considering that they cater to large groups of enthusiastic eaters. The place was tidy, the mural painting on the center wall was eye-catching, the tables and chairs were native-inspired, and the rest of the design was military (camouflage). The air conditioning needs improvement, though. It was a busy, full Sunday, and most of the customers were families or groups of friends. We didn’t have to wait long – they were clearing a table for ten when we arrived. My eyes caught an announcement that they were soon to open a new branch. This is good, as we barely had enough room to walk through in between back-to-back chairs.

PYT Stop Cafe Service

We called our order in advance; however, we still waited around 15-20 minutes for our food. While waiting, we noticed that the waiters were wearing camouflage uniforms aligned with the restaurant’s theme. The receptionist and waiters were also polite and accommodating. The waiters were busy going in and out of the kitchen, and it took some time even when we asked for cold water.

They had several boodle options offered. We had the Balaan Bukid Boodle Fight Feast for 8 persons and Tim’s Treat (Mini Boodle Fight Feast) for 3-4 persons. Aside from the regular dishes that you can order, here is the list of boodle fight feasts you can try depending on your group’s headcount.

After what seems like forever of waiting – I’m sure you can relate when I say 15-20 minutes seems like forever specially when you’re already very hungry – our food comes out, neatly arranged on top of a movable rectangular flat wood covered with banana leaves.

The PYT Stop Cafe “Cheer”

Before we started eating, the owner, with some of the waiters in uniform, briefly discussed how boodle fight originated, asked a few things about our group, if we’re there for a particular celebration, and that we had to cheer with them, “Fight! Fight! Fight!” before we dived in. The owner’s little customer engagement was a great idea; it was fun and gave a more personalized service.

As for the food, everything was freshly cooked and smelled wonderful; we totally forgot about our bad mood and immediately started to dig in. It was all totally worth the wait. The food was great; the seafood was fresh, and everything was perfectly seasoned.

The PYT Stop Cafe Value for Money

The food served was more than enough to feed and satisfy ten people, and some complained about being too full. We paid just a little over Php2,000 for them all. This is already a good deal if we compare it to other restaurants serving similar native food in Iloilo City. We will definitely be Pyt Stop “boodling” again.

My Rating: PYT Stop (Cafe) Restaurant, La Paz, Iloilo City
